Real and Smooth Radio Limited’s network of national and regional stations is attracting a record 5.8 million listeners a week. Listening hours are also at an all-time high with 51 million hours of the stations being consumed each week.
Total Smooth Radio UK has reported its strongest ever set of figures. Its weekly audience has grown to an impressive 3.7 million listeners a week – boosted by the debut results for Smooth 70s, which has posted its first set of figures this quarter. The digital sister station dedicated to the soulful sounds of the 70s has proven a massive hit, attracting 749,000 listeners each week who tune in for close to 5 million hours (4.85m).
Smooth’s Simon Bates at Breakfast has grown Q on Q and, with the addition of Smooth 70s, now attracts an impressive 1.68 million listeners to his show a week.
The Real Radio Network has had a steady quarter, with a notable increase in listener loyalty in Q3. The brand’s total listening hours have risen by 702,000 hours (QoQ) to 21.7 million a week, while weekly listeners are nudging 2.5 million (2.499).
Digital listening remains strong for Real and Smooth with 36% of the group’s total audience tuning in via a digital platform. This rises to over 43% for Smooth Radio’s UK wide audience – almost 27% on a DAB digital radio.
Real and Smooth Limited Group Programme Director John Simons said: “It’s a real milestone to smash through the 50 million hours barrier. At a time when there are so many calls on people’s time it’s great to see our stations continuing to grow listener loyalty. Now we’ve got our sights firmly set on our next target – to reach 6 million listeners!
“It’s also great to see Smooth 70s performing so well. We launched it quietly last Christmas and it has steadily grown and grown in popularity. It’s proving to be a powerful extension of the Smooth Radio brand.”
REGIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
North West
Smooth Radio is celebrating another record reach. 907,000 listeners now tune-in to the station each week – 34,000 more than a year ago. They listen for over 7.15 million hours a week. Sister station Real Radio is pulling in 442,000 adult listeners a week, while Manchester’s Real Radio XS has seen another increase in audience both QoQ and YoY to give it a new record total of 168,000 listeners a week. They tune in for a record 1.46 million hours each week. Across the North West more than 1.3 million adults tune-in to a Real or Smooth Radio station each week.
Yorkshire
Real Radio Yorkshire is celebrating its highest reach since Q2 2006 and the station is delighted with its latest Q3 figures. The station now attracts 396,000 listeners each week – up 25,000 (YoY). Real Radio is also enjoying its greatest listener loyalty since Q4, 2003 thanks to a huge increase in listening hours – up to 4.3 million a week from 3.6 million a year ago. The average listener now tunes in for 10.9 hours per week.
Wales
Real Radio Wales’ audience clearly loves what it hears, with listeners tuning in for 4.7 million hours each week, up over a quarter of a million hours (255,000) since the same time last year. 496,000 adult listeners tune into the station across Wales each week. In the South of the country reach has risen by 11,000 to 436,000 adults a week. Needless to say, Real Radio remains Wales’ biggest radio station.
Scotland
Real Radio remains the No.1 most listened to station across the Central Belt, with listeners tuning in for just over five million hours every week. A total of 545,000 adult listeners tune in weekly. Sister station Smooth Radio, which last quarter recorded a record-breaking reach in Scotland, is pleased to report YOY growth with 265,000 adult listeners tuning in each week, an increase of 10,000 (YoY). Classic rock station Real XS in Glasgow has recorded a reach of 63,000 adult listeners each week, up 3,000 YoY. 750,000 adults now tune into Smooth or Real in Scotland each week for over 7.5 million hours.
North East
Smooth Radio in the North East has reported a reach of 410,000 adult listeners each week, up 20,000 (QonQ). Listeners now tune into the station for a total of 3.19 million hours each week. At sister station Real Radio 252,000 adult listeners are tuning in each week. 595,000 listeners now tune into Smooth or Real Radio each week across the region.
East and West Midlands
Across the East and West Midlands a total of 667,000 adults tune-in to Smooth Radio each week for 6.55 million hours of listening.
